RCMA BOD Interview with Jason Smith
Sr. Scientist at Garland Company
What is your industry background?
I've been formulating coatings and adhesives for over 25 years; from polyurethanes, epoxies, acrylics and everything in between and I continue to love every moment of it. I joined RCMA in 2012 and started serving as co-chair to the Technical Affairs Committee (TAC) soon after. This is my second time on the Board of Directors, having first served prior to Covid. I have a profound respect for the company of people I'm in with the current Board and TAC. Lots of experience there to draw from.
Why is it important to serve on the RCMA Board of Directors?
I bring the perspective of the coatings formulator to the conversation. Some manage facilities that make coatings, others have formulated and are selling now. As a formulator, I have to be on the edge of regulatory developments, innovations in raw materials, coatings trends, etc. So it is important to have that insight at this level.
What value does RCMA bring to the industry?
The RCMA brings together all of the components of the roof coating industry to generate a louder, unified voice in the regulatory space, to help supplier members get an idea of where trends are headed to help them provide raw materials that the roof coating industry can use to fill gaps and set their products apart. The RCMA also helps build the professional networks between suppliers, manufacturers, and formulators that would take longer to occur through chance meetings, cold calling, or larger professional associations.
What do you like to do when you’re not immersed in roof coatings?
I enjoy time with my wife as recent empty nesters (in name only, my young adult kids still reside at home). I am also heavily involved with my church's Men's Ministry. When time permits, I build wooden model ships in my workshop.
